Wholesale walnuts and walnut kernels

Greek and imported walnut kernels in every grade, from whole halves to small pieces, plus Greek walnuts in shell. Walnut kernels are CARPEBO's main product.

Walnut kernel grades

Walnut kernels are sold by two criteria: piece size and colour. Halves (butterfly) are whole half kernels, quarters are large pieces and 1/8 are small pieces. The colour scale runs from Extra Light and Light, the palest and mildest, to Light Amber and Amber, the darker and more economical grades.

Greek or imported kernels?

Greek kernels come from Greek orchards growing Chandler, Franquette and Lara, and are chosen when Greek origin matters on the label. Imported kernels, mainly from Bulgaria and Ukraine but also from the USA and China, are usually cheaper and more widely available through the year.

Which grade for which use

  • Decoration and retail packs: Extra Light or Light halves
  • Baklava, walnut cake and syrup pastries: Light quarters
  • Cakes, cookies, fillings and sprinkling: pieces 1/8
  • Chocolate sweets, dark doughs and ground uses: Amber

Wholesale walnut prices

Walnut kernel prices depend on the crop year, origin, colour and grade. Greek kernels usually cost more than imported, halves more than quarters and pieces, and pale grades more than dark ones. Growers who want to sell their walnuts can visit CARPEBO Farmers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum order for walnut kernels?

One carton, usually 10 kg. For walnuts in shell, one 10 or 20 kg sack.

They are colour grades. Extra Light is the palest, followed by Light, both with a mild, sweet taste.
